Upton residents Daniel Rogers and Patrick Rielly, seniors at Nipmuc Regional High School in Upton, have organized “The Third Annual” Chipmunk 5K for ALS,” a race to raise money for The Angel Fund.
The road race will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009, beginning with registration at 9 a.m. and the race at 10 a.m. at the school. The 3.1-mile road race has been named “The Chipmunk 5K for ALS” after the successful Jimmy Kennedy “The Squirrel” Memorial Run for ALS held annually in Quincy in memory of Jimmy Kennedy, who died of ALS in 1997 at the age of 31. October 1, 2008 marks a monumental day for the ever-growing Angel Fund family, as well as for anyone with a stake in the battle versus ALS. This is the day that Dr. Robert Brown officially leaves Mass General Hospital, taking the Day Laboratory to the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, where he will join forces with Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Craig Mello.
In 2006 Dr. Mello received the Nobel Peace Prize for Medicine, in recognition of a technique known as RNA-interference. This revolutionary process makes it possible to manipulate an organism’s genetic material, essentially silencing or shutting down the expression of specific genes. Recognizing the enormous potential of such a technique for treatment of genetically based ALS, Dr. Mello sought the expertise of Dr. Brown and together they are leading us into a new chapter, one with potentially extraordinary results.
We continue to sing the praises of Dr. Brown as we travel along with him to Worcester. We thank Dr. Mello and his staff fo their brilliant work and enthusiastically look to the future with a renewed anticipation.
Our Annual Walk of Hope for ALS was a great success!
The Angel Fund families gathered in Wakefield on September 6th to participate in the 7th Annual Walk of Hope for ALS. Even though the skies were gray, it did not dampen the spirits of the families and friends who were there to raise money and awareness for ALS research.
Rich Kennedy, President of The Angel Fund, welcomed the walkers. Special guest speakers included: Katherine Clark, MA State Representative, Betsy Sheeran, Chairman of the Wakefield Board of Selectmen; and Dr. Robert Brown, Jr., Director of the Cecil B. Day Lab for Neuromuscular Research.
Prior to the walkers beginning their trek around Lake Quannapowitt, the annual dove release to honor those who are living with ALS and those who have passed away from ALS was held. Members from each walking team released the doves.
After the walk there was plenty of refreshments and entertainment. Special guest, Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster was on hand to sign autographs, along with clowns and magicians.
We would also like to thank our sponsors!! Walk of Hope Sponsors
The 5th annual Sharon Timlin Road Race to Cure ALS was a great success. Over 1400 runners participated in the 5K road race with many other family member joining in for the family fund day. Red Sox players, once agian, supported Mike Timlin and his family by signing autographs for their fans.
Roche Bros. Supermarkets, the major sponsor of the race, presented Mike and Dawn Timlin with a check for $45,000 in support of the race. The race is hosted by the Hopkinton Running Club and is held in memory of Mike Timlin’s mother Sharon who passed away from ALS in 2002.
The 7th Annual Harpoon Brewery 5 Miler was a great success. 1,500 runners and 200 volunteers particpated in the annual race. This year the Harpoon Brewery presented The Angel Fund with a check for $62,800. Harpoon has contributed over $200,000 to Angel Fund over the past seven years.
